Riverside Onion

Riverside (Allium cepa) is an open pollinated short / intermediate day onion (note: for growing between latitudes between 25° and 42°; i.e. Southern US).This yellow skinned onion is on the sweeter side, but there is a hit of spiciness in there as well. Bulbs can reach over two pounds and have good storage potential due to their thick outer layer. Second generation seed produced by us in Ojai, California: emphasis with this selection was resistance to early bolting and disease such as purple blotch.

Our current crop has been disease tested for:

  • Alternaria porri,
  • Stemphylium vesicarium,
  • Onion Yellow Dwarf Virus,
  • Potvvirus Group

and is free from these pathogens!

Read about Quin's work with improving this heirloom in 2018-2019, which includes some history of Riverside. Also see our video produced for the 2022 Culinary Breeding Network Variety showcase and discussion about the crop breeding

Onions are biennials. Riverside will produce bulbs 115 days when fall seeded under ideal conditions; 90-100 when spring sown.

Seeds are certified organic.
